Planting the Garlic
Last spring, the old horse field was cleared and planted with a lovely field of buckwheat. The soil was rich and buckwheat is an amazing summer crop cover (in addition to kasha and honey). Being located in the PNW, raised beds were formed to prevent any water logging and for ease of care. We are natural growers, so our main plant nutrition comes from generous amounts of compost we make, as well as seaweed, an incredible fertilizer in its own right with a long history of use. Then came the garlic planting, and the great maple tree, alder and oaks helped by shedding their leaves freely for mulch. It worked out well and we’re looking forward to a great harvest this summer.
